fonts of the cta: research.

December 29, 2013

I went out a little before the holidays got into full swing and hit up all of the underground CTA train stations in the city for my research of the typeface that used to adorn the lovely walls of our subway system. Up above is a quick sample shot of photos that I took during my quest. I think I ended up finding images of all but 5 letters, 1 of which I already had and 2 more I found while looking at a CTA auction site. Z, X and Q are nowhere to be seen in this subway, at least not down below by the trains. For my second phase I am going to go observe the upper levels of these stations and hopefully I will find some of those letters hidden among the signs and people. It’s highly unlikely because of the rareness of those letters but it’s always wise to be thorough.

good (old) stuff.

I was looking through my saved items in Google Reader yesterday and came across this video I saved from way back in December of last year. I finally watched it and it’s pretty good. It’s a 6-minute video of Ken Barber talking about type design and whatnot. Good things. Nicely made and informative. Click the photo above to check it out.

off book: type.

I had to cleanse my palette from that last post with some fresh and clean type design stuff. Here is a little ditty from PBS that features Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones talking about type choice and how it relates to conveying a mood and all that good stuff. You may know their work most recently by the Obama “Change” posters from 2008. Their typeface “Gotham” was used on those posters and pretty much throughout his whole campaign. Good stuff there. that sweet cheddah.

Dolla-dolla bill y’all! Working on the new font up above. Trying to come up with a sweet-ass solution for the dollar symbol. Proving more difficult that I originally anticipated. Oh well. Back at it today with a full plate of work to munch on. I took care of issues we were having trying to get a Kustom Persuasion sign printed and now I’m working on some editorial design work. Big day, big week, huge month.

google+ goodies.

So I was playing around with Google+ today and I decided to finally get in there and start using that Google profile I set up a while back. After setting up the main stuff I went into the Reader portion of it. Damn. I feel like a whole world opened up for me again. Sadly I haven’t been this excited to use the internet in years. It’s just really simple and I dig simple stuff. Anyway, I was looking through the typography sections and came across this designer, Ángel Sánchez, from Spain. Real good stuff in that portfolio. The two latest fonts are up for free download as well.
