the next typeface.

November 30, 2013

I am going out today to begin the first stages of creating my next typeface. It’s based on some old inlaid enamel lettering that can be found in only a few remaining underground CTA stations. I originally fell in love with the typeface after seeing the ampersand over and over as I made my way downtown. Sadly the example above is no longer on the wall. The CTA decided that covering up the classic type with a big ugly Helvetica sign is better than restoring it to it’s former glory. That’s a dumb idea in my book and I want to get a font made before it’s too late.

Anyway, with some luck I will be able to get about 3/4 of the letters that I want today. I am just going to ride to each station that is underground and check it all out. I need a get a bunch of photos to be able to properly recreate this thing and I figured today is as good a day as any to go do it.

Look for updates soon.

moving day.

Moving some stuff from Ohio to our new apartment in Chicago. Couch, media stuff, guitars, record player… basically a bunch of stuff we couldn’t take before. We got rained on around Toledo and it got some of the stuff a little damp. Not too fun of happenings there. It’s pretty nice now though. We’re currently on the turnpike in Indiana making our way to Illinois. I might have some more pics later on during our journey.

here and there.

So we’ve officially become Chicago residents. There has been some boring days and some definite crazy ones as well. That photo above is of the apartment complex we live in. In the middle of the photo is a darker section. You can read about that below. Warning: Long post ahead about our time here so far.

gettin’ it done.

Just like the lads above I am getting things done. They plant shrubs in some dirt, I plant graphics on paper. It looks like I’ll be hitting up Kent this week. Didn’t think I’d make it but it seems I can make it happen after all. Kustom Persuasion identity work is pretty much done at this point. I have to get some stuff printed for it and we are wrappin’ that beast up in a bow and sending it off for a while. Land of misfit designs kind of stuff. I don’t want to look at it for a little while (unless to admire from afar). Anyway, a few more printed pieces to create and then it’s total printing extravaganza while I am in Kent. Fun times. Now to hit the hay (it’s almost 3am). Pics of some early Kustom Persuasion work coming a little later today.

dirty living.

Dig that dirty mustache right there. You had better enjoy that picture because it’s gone now. I had to rid myself of all the dirt on my lip before I hit up Chicago last weekend. I made a trip to Dick Blick downtown to check out a new portfolio and such.

As I was readying some work for a new portfolio I stumbled across some old mockups from last summer. Good times. Never worked on final versions and these were done by just searching for stuff on Google images. Lots of Photoshop work in there folks. More than meets the eye. I really would have liked to create finals. Completed versions would have been killer.

miles away and back.

So… I had an interview yesterday. Nothing came from it really but that’s ok. That’s life. I am a little bitter about it though. In the end all this stuff could have been avoided by calling me as I suggested. Did they? No… not to find out anything about me at least. Whatever though. It was a nice day to drive and it was nice to have a 3rd day off of work. It got me in the mood for my road trip coming up. It’s happenin. Keep an eye out for it as I will be blogging from the road.

Also, I have been watching Helvetica when I go to sleep so I decided to attempt to use that font again with the above pic. I don’t think I’ve used Helvetica since I was a sophomore in school (2006). It’s got so many options though. Fun times. Hit the jump to see the only good thing that was photographed over the course of this little trip.
